Hello and welcome to the International Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy!

It is an exciting time to enter the field of language arts! Many are drawn to this work because of a personal experience with the healing power of words. We are glad you are here and are interested in discovering more about the training and credentialing process in biblio/poetry therapy.

Ours is a “school without walls,” a community of Mentor/Supervisors who shepherd trainees through the learning process of becoming a credentialed facilitator. For over 30 years, the Federation has set the standard for professional practice in poetry therapy by ensuring that our independent trainers (Mentors/Supervisors) adhere to the highest ethical guidelines for service with integrity, and that those who hold the CPT (Certified Poetry Therapy), PTR (Registered Poetry Therapist), or CAPF (Certified Applied Poetry Facilitator) understand the history, theory and practical applications of this powerful tool.

It is likely you will have many questions about the training process. Browsing these pages will answer many of your questions about the relevance and practice of using poetry with others. You will also find a wealth of resources including definitive answers to your training questions, information about approved mentor/supervisors, an updated resource bibliography, links to other relevant sites and the most recent IFBPT Guide to Training in Biblio/Poetry Therapy, available to you as a download.

Each year we take part in the National Association for Poetry Therapy’s annual conference. The 2018 conference will be held at the Oakridge Hotel and Conference Center in Chaska, MN, near Minneapolis, from April 26-29, 2018. You are warmly invited to attend and experience the Federation’s Triple Workshop, a 3-session peer group, which replicates the beginning, middle and end phases of the process of poetry therapy and counts toward training hours. The conference also offers additional rich opportunities to learn how we can utilize the healing power of the language arts to help those in need in a wide range of educational and therapeutic settings.

Discover how training can help you to connect your passion for poetry with others in this growing field! We welcome hearing from you and encourage you to be in touch for more information.

Poetically yours,
Elaine Brooks, PTR*, CAPF, Co-President
Nancy Scherlong, PTR, Co-President
